The Newby Trust Limited

Based in Kingsbridge, South Devon, the Newby Trust is a small family-based trust which makes grants to local, regional or national UK charities within the broad general categories of education, environment, health and social welfare.

The overarching purpose of the Trust is to enable people in the UK to improve their quality of life and fulfil their potential. In 2024, the trustees added a new category to provide support for the natural environment.

In the Education, Health and Welfare categories all activities must be undertaken in the UK and the Trust is more likely to fund smaller or medium-sized charities with an annual income of less than £1,000,000.  In the Environment category, the Trust will fund larger charities and projects may be outside the UK but the applicant and grant-recipient must be a UK-registered charity.  In general, only charities that are invited to apply will be considered for a grant.

The Trust’s current priorities are:

  1. Education – the Trust will support initiatives that enable people to benefit from educational opportunities and to support excellence. Specifically, the Trust wishes to:
  • Fund extra-curricular artistic and sporting activities for children and young people, and
  • Nurture ability and talent at all ages.

2.  Environment – this was added as an additional funding category in 2024.  The aim is to protect or restore climate-critical habitats and to slow down climate change.  The objectives within the category are to:

  • Support local initiatives that help biodiversity and the natural environment, and
  • Challenge and prevent environmentally damaging activities.

3.  Health – the broad objectives of the health category are to:

  • Maintain and improve the mental health of children and young people, and
  • Support people with dementia.

4.  Social Welfare – the aim of the social welfare category is to improve people’s quality of life in disadvantaged communities.  The Trust’s broad objectives in this category are to:

  • Support refugees and asylum seekers, and
  • Support people without secure homes and food.
