NCVO: Supporting good governance (4 x 0.5 days) – March
This course will help you implement structures and processes to support trustees, and ensure systems are aligned with your organisation’s purpose and objectives.
By the end of the training, you’ll:
- understand the role and responsibilities of trustees, as well as the legal frameworks that they must adhere to
- understand how administrative systems and processes underpin the principles of good governance
- have defined and explored the role and responsibilities of the board secretary
- be able to consider how to build the foundations of effective governance through a number of methods. These include agendas, reporting and minute taking, a cycle of business, a scheme of delegates’ authority, and a register of interests
- explore the different approaches to board review and understand its benefits
- discuss governance as leadership within an organisation
- discuss how you’ll influence and promote positive behaviours.
This training will take place on Zoom. We will send out the Zoom link with the joining instructions before the session.
The training will take place over four half days. You need to attend all sessions of the same course.
- Thursday 1 May – Session 1: Understanding the sector and trusteeship (10.00 until 13.00)
- Thursday 8 May – Session 2: Defining good governance (10.00 until 13.00)
- Thursday 15 May – Session 3: Governance in practice (10.00 until 13.00)
- Thursday 22 May – Session 4: Skills and values for the governance professional (10.00 until 13.00)
The four sessions will focus on the following.
- What we know: Sector context, the role of the board, and the law.
- What we do: Good governance, decision-making, and continuous improvement.
- How we work: Governance practice, reporting, regulation.
- Who we are: The role of the governance professional, influencing, competencies.

Organisations with a gross annual income of less than £30,000 can join NCVO for free.
