The bystander session is for anyone and will cover the following:

  • The extent of gender-based violence in England and Wales
  • What is work place harassment and the extent of this
  • Discuss the role of bystanders in the prevention of abuse
  • Identify a range of tools that can be used to safely support/challenge others
  • Describe ways to support individuals who may disclose abuse

Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week is observed annually in February. In 2025, the event will take place from February 5th to February 11th. Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week has its roots in the broader movement to address and prevent sexual violence. It emerged as a response to the pressing need to acknowledge the experiences of survivors and foster a society where such acts are not tolerated. Over the years, this awareness week has gained momentum and expanded its reach, with numerous organizations, activists, and advocates joining forces to make a difference. It provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the work that still lies ahead in combatting sexual abuse and violence.

Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in preventing sexual abuse and violence, supporting survivors, and creating a safer and more respectful world for all. Therefore in respect of this aim Barnardos will host a Bystander in the Workplace webinar focusing how to respond to Sexual Harassment in the workplace. Sexual Harassment is often not understood as a form of sexual abuse and often be minimised in terms of its severity and clear link with other forms of Sexual abuse and Violence. The Bystander Toolkit seeks to raise awareness of the links and provide a toolkit for employees to use in order to call out, support and protect colleagues from Sexual Harassment.
